Lifeguard Training

The Lifeguard certification course through the YMCA of the USA is designed to provide participants the knowledge and skills necessary to be a lifeguard and professional rescuer. The course presents information on the skills and knowledge lifeguards need in pool, lake, river, surf, and waterpark environments.

Participants will also be certified in American Safety and Health Institute’s (ASHI) courses:
Basic Life Support, Basic First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen.

Participants must be at least 16 years of age by the end of the course to earn certification.

Must pass the prerequisite swim held on Sunday, February 17 at 2 pm at the Downtown YMCA

Classes will be held at the Downtown YMCA on Sundays from 11 am to 4 pm .  Class dates are February 24, March 3, 10, 17, 24, and 31.

The person will also have to complete on line learning for YMCA lifeguarding, Basic Life Support, First Aid and Emergency Oxygen Administration before the start of the course.

February/March Prerequisite Swim

The Prerequisite swim will be held on Sunday, February 17 at 2pm at the Downtown YMCA. Swim will take less than one hour.  Once the person passes the swim he/she will be able to sign up for the Lifeguarding course.  If you have any questions please contact Jeanne Moss at 452-3261 ext 274 or email at [email protected]

The Swim has 3 phases.

Phase 1 Tread water for 2 minutes then swim 100 yards of front crawl

Phase 2 :  swim 60 yards of each of the following strokes with good form: Front Crawl head up, breaststroke, Breaststroke head up, side stroke, elementary backstroke kick only.  Then you perform a feet first surface dive and swim 15 feet underwater

Phase 3:   Sprint front crawl head up, keeping your eyes where the object went underwater.  Do a head first surface dive and recovery the object off the bottom of the pool.  Hold it with 2 hands and tread water leg only for 1 minute.  Then you take the object back to the bottom of the pool.  Then you get the surface and finish the length of pool and climb out ( with out any ladders) and perform 100 compressions of CPR.  then follow the directions given to you.

Lifeguard Class

This class will train the participant to be a YMCA lifeguard. Participants must attend all classes and complete all on on line learning by required dates.  If everything is successfully completed the participant will be certified as a YMCA lifeguard, Basic Life Support, Emergency Oxygen administration and Basic first aid

Lifeguard Prerequisite Swim

The purpose of the prerequisite swim is to determine that participants have the strength and endurance needed to participate in the Lifeguard Course. The Prerequisite swim must be taken and passed prior to signing up for the Lifeguard Course. The swim consist of 3 phases:
Phase 1: Tread water for 2 minutes using only your legs and swim 100 yards of Front Crawl
Phase 2: Review Survival Strokes, Surface dives and an endurance swim of 50 yards of the following Stroke: Front Crawl with head up, Sidestroke, Breaststroke, Breaststroke head up, Elementary Backstroke kick. Then a feetfirst surface dive and swim under water for 15 feet.
Phase 3: Sprint about 60 feet then perform a arm-over-arm surface dive and pick up an object from the bottom, tread water holding object for 1 minute legs only and then return object to bottom of pool. Sprint the rest of the pool length and climb out without using any ladders or other assistance.

Lifeguard Training

The comprehensive course offers up-to-date information on how to lifeguard by anticipating and preventing problems before they occur and by taking action to help those in danger when necessary. The course covers safety skills, accident prevention, scanning, guarding techniques, emergency systems, rescue skills, first aid in aquatic environments, spinal injury management, open water dangers, legal responsibilities, pool maintenance basics, and information on how to get a job as a lifeguard.

You must pass the Prerequisite Swim prior to signing up for a Lifeguard Course.
